Today’s interview is with celebrity psychic and author Laura Powers, who pens delightful books on spirituality and the divine while traveling the world. We caught her on a brief moment between travels and asked about her ideas, inspirations, and how she puts words onto the page.

HG: I’m interviewing you about your books, but I have to start off with the total Laura package! It seems like your writing is a seamless part of your business and passion. So, to start off – how would you describe yourself to our readers who might not be that familiar with you?

LP: I am a psychic medium, entertainer, and explorer and I love to use my gifts and abilities to help people lead the best life possible. Ever since I was little I have sensed ghosts and the spiritual realm and now I use my abilities to see what others aren’t and teach them how to navigate. I have a fun and very interesting life!

HG: Where did writing come into part of this vision? It certain seems like you’re not an “only” person – as in, you’re not “only” a writer, or “only” a psychic. You have a lot going on. You wrote your first book in 2012, right?

LP: Yes, that is correct. I had started working as a psychic and booked a talk about angels at a local library and decided I wanted a product to show during my talk. I wrote my first book Life and the After Life: Notes from a Medium and Angel Communicator in 6 weeks and then professionally packaged it later. I am a big believer in taking big, bold steps.

HG: How did writing that book go? Did you plan it out before hand? Just sit down and write?

LP: I told my story about being a psychic kid, growing up with my abilities, how I suppressed my gifts and then eventually opened back up. It was part memoir and partly about what I had learned about the spiritual realm because of my abilities. But yeah it was pretty much a brain dump and a lot of what I write is channeled so I write very fast.

HG: What’s your writing process like? Do you have an office? Do you sit in Starbucks? Do you schedule time every day to write?

LP: I get inspiration and then I get a psychic download for the structure and content so once I start writing it flows quickly. The longest and hardest part for me because it feels tedious is the editing and packaging of the book. When I am writing and channeling that part comes quickly! I write when I feel inspired or when my spirit guides have given me a deadline. I write wherever I am in my laptop. I travel full time so that might be in London (where I am writing you now) or in LA, or in Denver or any number of places. Sometimes I will go to a place and just write. My book Archangels and Ascended Masters was mostly written in 6 weeks when I was in Mexico. Some places I do feel more inspired to write.

HG: I love the way you use the term channeling. When I write it all comes so fluidly it’s like my only job is to use my grasp of English to download it from my experience of it to the keyboard.

LP: Ha yeah, yes, channeled writing is much easier than research writing for me! And I don’t have a schedule and tend to write when inspiration strikes. The routine for me comes with the editing, formatting and release of the book. Then I typically have deadlines and structure as I create pre-orders of the book and am often finishing those final stages while I am doing pre-sales. Since I travel full time I write a lot on planes and at night. Also at times I will just block off my calendar and write.

HG: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about writing?

LP: I would say to write about what you are passionate about and no one is going to write the same thing you are so write what inspires you. It’s a huge world out there and you can make a living with even a relatively small number of supporters as a creator. I think the best advice is not give up and keep doing it! I think the success goes up more than incrementally after you release more than a few books, the whole 20 books to 50k thing.

I find that success with writing tends to come over a long period of time. It can feel like a slog but if you keep doing it and are true to yourself and your authenticity, you can be successful. In essence, don’t give up. I recently interviewed Celebrity Hairstylist Martino Cartier and he had a great quote that really stood out to me. He said, “Don’t get bitter, get better.” In other words, keep your eye on the goal and focus on progress and improvement.

HG: That sounds absolutely right. I always tell people that the only writer who ever got famous off a single book was Harper Lee. So, are your books self-published, or did you go through a publishing house? Your covers are beautiful – everything about your books looks very polished.

LP: Thank you! I opted to self-publish because I could publish in my own time on the topics I wanted to write about. And thank you! I have gone to many publishing conferences and conferences for writers and I think that has helped me to package the books professionally. But I also think it doesn’t have to be that hard. I think traditional publishing is great, too! I may opt for that option in the future.

HG: I make my living as a self-published author, so I don’t know it – you have so much more control over everything!

LP: I think you can build your platform via self publishing and then stay on that track or go into traditional publishing once you have built your platform and audience.

HG: So, how did you achieve the polished look of your books? And the solid reviews? What’s your process in terms of editing and revision?

LP: I work with professionals to get the final result and also utilize beta or advanced readers to help get the content as strong as possible. I work hard to make sure the books get read by many professionals and regular readers to catch errors and inconsistencies beforehand.

HG: Are you working on anything right now?

LP: I’m in the editing and packaging phase for my next book on my work with animals. I am a pet psychic and animal medium. I find animals fascinating and am excited to have that book out in the world!

HG: You’re involved in a world that mainstream society conditions us to be skeptical off… How do you feel about that, and have you experienced any negativity about what you do? How do you cope with that?

LP: Thankfully I don’t tend to deal with a lot of skeptics, most of the people I am connecting with are genuinely interested in what I do as well as open and curious. That said, I don’t try to make anyone believe what I do, but rather to share my perspective and experiences with them and they can decide for themselves.

HG: What books or authors have influenced or inspired you?

LP: Oh, wow – so many! I have read many books by other psychics. I also love fiction books about the magical and psychic realm. When I was younger I read a lot of Stephen King and Anne Rice. I have been a huge fan of JK Rowling ever since the first Harry Potter book. Non fiction-wise, I love the book Outwitting The Devil, by Napoleon Hill.
